Whenever a Piece attacks the enemy King, it is said that the King is in Check (or that the Piece is giving check to it)
Take Note! - When a King is Checked, it has three options:
To capture the attacking piece
(with the King itself or with a piece other than the King but of its own side)

Possibilities of the King
The King has captured the Rook annuling the Check.
The King can only escape the Check because the square where the Rook is, is attacked by the Bishop. In this case we say that the Rook is defended.
